Skip the hype, eat well fast. Here’s the quick filter we use in any city.
1) Map the 10-Minute Rule
Only consider spots within a 10-minute walk of where you already are. Less travel, more eating.
2) Read the Room, Not the Stars
Peek inside: full but not frantic, diverse crowd, staff moving with purpose. Red flags: door hawkers, laminated mega-menus, empty at prime time.
3) Menu Scan (60 seconds)
Short menu, seasonal notes, 1–2 clear specials. If everything from sushi to burgers is listed—pass.
4) Line Logic
If there’s a line, ask the host the real wait time. Over 25 minutes? Grab your Plan B nearby and star this one for another meal.
5) Local Anchor Items
Look for one dish that ties to the region (market fish, neighborhood staple, bakery’s signature). Order that + one wildcard.
6) Price Check Without Panic
Compare 3 items (starter, main, drink). If all are “tourist-high,” pivot. Good places exist on every budget.
7) Post-Meal Signal
If it was great, star it and jot one-line notes (best table, dish to repeat). Future you (and friends) will thank you.
Quick Ordering Play
- Share one starter, two mains, one veg/side.
- Ask: “What are guests coming back for this week?”
- Skip dessert if you’re moving—grab it at a bakery on the stroll home.
Red Flags (Hard Pass)
- Photo walls of every dish
- QR menu with broken links
- Pushy staff steering you to “combo deals”
- Microwave ping soundtrack
